The Leader of the Scottish Labour Party slammed the protest as 'disgusting'

The Scottish Parliament was disrupted at lunchtime today for a third time in recent weeks after a protester began shouting during First Minister's Questions.

Leader of the Scottish Labour Party, Anas Sarwar was sharing his heartfelt condolences with the people of Turkey and Syria following the tragic earthquakes when an activist shouted from the public gallery.

Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone acted quickly to stop proceedings before questions resumed a short while later.

It follows two other similar incidents during FMQs when oil protesters took action last week and in January.

Sarwar branded the disruption "disgusting" as told the Scottish Parliament: "I would question disruption at any time but to disrupt when we're talking about the lives lost in Turkey and Syria, I think is frankly disgusting."

Last Thursday protesters disrupted proceedings when three people sitting in the public gallery stood, one after the other, and shouted comments and questions to the assembled MSPs about climate and housing issues.

The protest was by a combination of groups including Just Stop Oil Scotland, This is Rigged, Extinction Rebellion Scotland and Fuel Poverty Action, speaking out against those involved in North Sea oil and plans to demolish high-rise flats in Glasgow.

Last month Sturgeon had been taking a question on the record temperatures recorded in Scotland last year as an activist began to shout.

The first intervention asked the First Minister to “oppose each and every new oil or gas project”.

A second person added: "We need proper opposition to Westminster non Rosebank and Jackdaw and no new onshore projects like Peterhead - which you have control over."

The chaos comes after Sturgeon clashed with Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross over trans rights.

Ross quizzed the First Minister over the handling of the case of a double rapist placed in a women’s prison.

Isla Bryson – who will be sentenced later this month for raping two women while she was a man –was initially housed in segregation at Cornton Vale prison near Stirling, before being moved to the men’s estate.

Sturgeon refused to say whether the transgender rapist was a man or a woman.
