More than one in every five voters who backed Khan at the last election (21 per cent), now say they would back Corbyn

A bombshell new poll has shown that Sadiq Khan may be turfed out of City Hall if Jeremy Corbyn stands as an independent.

This comes amid plummeting approval ratings for Khan over his deeply unpopular expansion of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone.

Jeremy Corbyn, who is threatening to stand in the mayoral election as an independent candidate, would take 21 percent of Khan's vote - handing the victory to Conservative candidate Susan Hall.

The poll, conducted by Redfield and Wilton for the Times, showed Hall taking 30 percent of the vote, while Khan would only take 25 percent.

More than one in every five voters who backed Khan at the last election (21 per cent), now say they would back Corbyn.

In previous years, this outcome would lead to a second round of votes, denying Hall an automatic win. But this year, the election is being held using First Past the Post.

This would mean such a vote share would give Hall an immediate win.

Corbyn has been banned from standing as the Labour candidate in his Islington North Constituency at the next general election.

But he has refused to rule out running to be the next London mayor.

A victory for the Conservatives in the race is looking increasingly likely amid Khan's plummeting approval ratings.

The polling shows that the mayor's approval rating has dropped by 22 points since last June- falling to a meagre 5 per cent approval.

Redfield and Wilton polled 1,110 London voters on 5 and 6 September.

The London Mayor has faced growing backlash in recent months for his expansion of Ulez in London, with the Mayor facing a High Court challenge over the plans.

The £12.50 Ulez charge applies to vehicles that do not meet up-to-date emissions standards.

It was recently expanded to cover the whole of London, having previously covered just inner London.

If a vehicle does not meet Ulez emission standards, drivers who fail to pay receive a penalty charge notice of up to £180.

This is reduced to £90 if paid within two weeks. The fines increased in January from £160 and £80 respectively.

Conservative mayoral candidate Susan Hall last month described the plans as "disastrous", pledging to reverse the expansion on "day one" if she becomes Mayor.

Hitting out at the Labour Mayor, Ms Hall told GB News: "Londoners have made their voices loud and clear on Sadiq Khan’s disastrous Ulez expansion.

"The Mayor has pursued this policy that does next to nothing to improve air quality, while hitting the poorest with a £12.50 daily charge.

"I will stop the Ulez expansion on day one of my Mayoralty."
