'It just goes to show that Labour simply ignore the North - as they always have,' ex-Tory MP Peter Gibson fumed

Rachel Reeves has spent just two working days at the Treasury's multi-million-pound northern hub since the General Election, it has emerged.

The Chancellor had vowed to use the Darlington Economic Campus (DEC) "regularly" and said she "absolutely will" have meetings there during a visit last summer, and urged her Ministers to do the same.

She had also hailed the campus as a "real success story" - but now, the Northern Echo reports that Reeves has spent just two days working at the DEC.

Reeves's first working day in Darlington came on July 11, and the second remains unknown.

And she has since been accused of "ignoring the North" and "failing to capitalise" on the Tories' "incredible legacy" at the site.

Ex-Darlington MP Peter Gibson and Tory councillor Jonathan Dulston both said they were disappointed by the news, while Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has vowed to keep pushing for a "real presence" at the campus.

Gibson said that both Reeves and Sir Keir Starmer had "failed to capitalise on this incredible legacy from the last administration".

"To my mind it just goes to show that Labour simply ignore the North as they always have," he added.

While Dulston said Rishi Sunak was visible "almost every other week" at the DEC when he was Chancellor.

He continued: "Levelling up was about decision-making coming away from Westminster - and having Ministers working from Darlington sent a strong message that things were changing and that the North is as important as the South.

"I am disappointed that the new Labour ministerial team don't see this as a priority and continue to do business from London."

Houchen said: "Senior ministers should be fully engaged in making the Darlington Economic Campus a success, and I'll continue to push for investment and a real presence from decision-makers to ensure our region gets the support it deserves."

On July 11, Reeves said: "I'm on day six of the job, I'm already here - not just in a flying visit, but working here, having meetings with colleagues and staff.

"We want this to continue and it absolutely will. It's not just me - I had my first meeting with my new ministerial team yesterday and one of the key things I said in that meeting was that I want Ministers working not just from London but from Darlington. I think it's really important that we do that.

"I know that talent in our country is spread throughout it, but for too long too many jobs have been focused in London and the South East.

"I want to draw on the huge talent there is here in the North East to bring good jobs here at this campus."

A Treasury spokesman said: "The Chancellor is fully committed to The Darlington Economic Campus (DEC) - which is central to our plans to increase regional representation.

"We are proud to be nearing our target of 335 HMT roles based in Darlington, including a number of the most senior Treasury staff."
