The Chancellor told the CBI conference that she is 'not coming back with more borrowing or more taxes'

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has been accused of "conning" British businesses and acting like a "con man on the run", following her latest tax pledge.

During her appearance at the CBI conference on Monday, Reeves faced a challenging reception from business leaders, but ambitiously pledged not to increase taxes further.

Addressing the conference, Reeves stated: "I faced a problem, and I faced into it...we've put our public finances back on a firm footing, and we've now set the budgets for public services for the duration of this Parliament.

"Public services now need to live within their means because I'm really clear, I'm not coming back with more borrowing or more taxes."

Criticising Reeves, political commentator Piers Pottinger blasted the Chancellor's latest claim and told GB News she is a "liar".

Pottinger fumed: "She keeps changing her appearance all the time, rather like a sort of con man on the run. And she knows the British people are onto her, she's a liar.

"She lied on her CV, and blamed her staff - that's an appalling and dishonourable thing to do, blame them for your mistakes. She's a reprehensible person, and the electorate are onto her."

Noting how Labour made promises to British businesses before the election, Pottinger highlighted how Reeves and Starmer "conned" businesses with pledges that "never turned out to be true".

Pottinger stated: "She's conned them once by making a whole lot of pledges with Starmer, none of which turned out to be true, and she conned the business by schmoozing them before the election, saying we are friends of business, when in fact all they've done is penalise business.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"I don't believe her for one second that she's going to come back and not do more damage to business, because she hasn't done any single thing to help British business."

In complete disagreement with Pottinger, political commentator Nigel Nelson hit back and claimed that he was making "serious accusations" about the Chancellor.

Nelson said: "It's quite a serious allegation to say that she conned people. Economic growth would come through the green technology that they're promising.

"What was the con? What is the promise she's actually broken, or the things she said she would do that she hasn't done?"

Pottinger responded: "She said she wasn't going to raise taxes, she also said that she was going to cut university student fees - there's a litany of things that she said along with Starmer.

"She has promised British businesses economic growth - how can you promise economic growth if you don't encourage business? It's madness!"

Blasting Labour's bureaucracy on business, Pottinger concluded: "They're loading more and more bureaucracy on business, and they're making it harder for them to grow and make a profit.

"And they're certainly making it harder to employ people."
