Nigel Farage appeared reluctant to release his tax return for the next financial year

Rachel Reeves has performed a spectacular U-turn just hours after refusing to release her tax return with the public.

The Chancellor had ruled out sharing the details after being quizzed by GB News' Political Editor Christopher Hope at her growth speech in Oxfordshire earlier today.

He asked: "Millions are sending in their tax returns this week to HMRC, you're in charge of it, will you publish your tax return?"

Reeves responded: "Thank you for the reminder to everyone to get their tax returns in... We will use that money wisely to invest in infrastructure and grow our economy."

She added: “Chancellors and prime ministers haven’t published their tax returns in the past, and I don’t have any plans to do so.”

However, a Treasury spokesman has since confirmed the details will soon be made public.

Reeves’s decision to U-turn on her tax return comes shortly after it was pointed out that ex-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and former Chancellor Jeremy Hunt shared information on their tax affairs while holding high office.

Despite Reeves eventually opting to release her tax return, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch refused to make the same promise.

“All of her declarations are made in line with the register of members’ interests,” a spokesman for the Leader of the Opposition said.

A Conservative source also told GB News: "Kemi has no plans to publish her tax return. The Conservatives are in Opposition."

After it was pointed out that Starmer and his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn had published their tax returns, the source said that they did so "a month or so before a General Election".

However, Corbyn, now the Independent MP for Islington North, published his return during his time as Opposition leader in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Starmer as Opposition leader published his tax returns in 2023 and 2024.

In 2024, a summary of his return showed the Prime Minister had paid almost £100,000 to the taxman in 2022/23.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage revealed he would not publish his tax return for 2023/24, pointing out he was not an MP during that period.

He also stressed it was unlikely that he would release his details for the 2024/25 financial year.

Speaking to the People’s Channel, Farage said: “I will think about it but I doubt it. Do they want my inside leg measurements?”
