The right-wing party now commands 25 per cent of voter support according to the latest YouGov poll

Watch as tensions simmered on GB News after former Labour spokesman James Matthewson raised a point about Britons turning to ‘far-right’ factions in politics.

He appeared to be making reference to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, who are riding the crest of a wave after topping a YouGov poll this week for the first time.

GB News star Martin Daubney put it to his debating partner that Britons are “sick” of being called far-right for showing concern about issues like immigration.

But Matthewson doubled down, insisting that he will continue to call a spade a spade.

“I’m worried about people thinking they have no other option and they have to go to extremes”, he said.

“When they go to extremes, it is minorities targeted by those on the far-right that will lose out and that’s the big worry.

“We have got to get our act together on the Left if we are going to put forward an alternative vision that will win people back.”

Martin said he agreed with the latter point, but a good starting point would be to “stop calling everyone you disagree with far-right.”

He added: “You just did it there. That is why the Red Wall is going turquoise. People are sick of being called far-right for holding normal, mainstream opinions.”

Matthewson defended his claims by arguing he “isn’t calling people in the Red Wall far-right at all”, adding: “I’m calling people who are politicians who are far-right, far-right.

“If you despise multiculturalism and your main direction right now politically is trans people…”

Martin was quick to interject, saying the trans row is a “sideshow” and those on the right like Donald Trump are keen to stamp out the culture war in order to focus on more important matters.

The pair were initially discussing Reform UK’s momentum which Matthewson admitted is something that concerns him greatly.

The right-wing party now commands 25 per cent of voter support according to the latest YouGov poll, with Labour trailing at 24 per cent while the Tories struggle in third place at 21 per cent.

The Liberal Democrats secured 14 per cent of the share while the Greens polled at nine per cent.

Speaking in response to the polling, Nigel Farage said “Reform has all the momentum in British politics and we are only just getting started”.
