MPs are set to vote on the proposal to scrap the winter fuel allowance today

Carole Malone was embroiled in a furious row on GB News and said that "pensioners should not be frightened to turn the heating on" as she discussed the Winter Fuel Payment axe.

Thousands of pensioners will be affected, as the Labour Government slashes the extra money given to help them to battle the cold.

MPs are set to vote on the proposal to scrap the winter fuel allowance – worth between £100 and £300 a year - later today.

Speaking to GB News, Malone said: "So remarkable this really I mean I pensioners just back of the queue in Keir Starmer. It is beyond shocking.

"This is the man who kept on telling us before the election that he was going to look after Britain's most vulnerable, that the Labour Party was the party to do that.

"But yet he appears to hate old people. I wonder if he's punishing them because he thought most of them voted Tory in the election, however, that's beside the point.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"The point here is pensioners are some of the most vulnerable in our society. And when Theresa May was going to do this in 2017 he said it will be the single biggest attack on pensioners in a generation. So why is he doing exactly the same thing?"

Broadcaster Benjamin Butterworth argued: "I think it's absolutely right that they don't get these winter bonuses going forward. The idea is that we have a situation where millions of the most financially secure, wealthiest people in society get a £300 payout each summer.

"While there are sky-high taxes for workers who have much less income, is completely unjustifiable and economically unsustainable.

He added: "In the last 14 years there has been a bigger increase in the incomes and wealth of pensioners than any other group."

Carole furiously responded: "Pensioners should not be in the position to have to plead and beg and justify for money and be means tested for money.

"This is not a handout, this is money they've paid into the state all of their lives. And all those groups have not paid into our state and have not done their bit for this country.

"These people haven't had to beg at this stage in their life. They should and pensioners should not be frightened to turn the heat on."

Backbench Labour MPs will now look to mount a rebellion against Starmer, as the Prime Minister looks to force through his plan to means-test the energy bill subsidy.

Keir Starmer has been forced to hold a vote on the axe after pressure from the Tories.

The Prime Minister stressed he is now “glad” a vote is going ahead, adding: “I think it's very important for Parliament to speak on this.

“This is really tough, and I do get that it's tough, it's not easy, and no Prime Minister wants to take a decision like this."
