Mordaunt joked: 'In their quest for total incompetence, the SNP leaves no stone unturned'

Penny Mordaunt has accused the SNP of pursuing a "quest for total incompetence", tearing into the party in a brutal Commons rant.

The Leader of the Commons used her weekly back and forth with the SNP's Dierdre Brock to mock the party after it recovered a chip from the Stone of Destiny in a cupboard in its headqaurters.

The relic, gifted to former leader Alex Salmond, was initially feared to be lost.

The stone was used as the coronation location for Scottish kings until it was seized and taken to Westminster Abbey by King Edward I of England in 1296 during the wars of independence.

Mocking the SNP for the latest saga, Mordaunt said: "I am delighted that part of the Stone of Destiny has now been recovered from the SNP headquarters from the SNP HQ. Which was a great relief for all members.

"It is easy to lose things I know, like a couple of billion quid from your budget but I am sorry to hear that they have taken as much care of it as they have as the stewards of Scotland's public services.

"Happily Mr Speaker, the Tupperware container that it was stored in has protected it during its stay and the police raids on that premises.

"And I would join with my Scottish colleagues in encouraging the SNP to find a new suitable home for it."

Sharing a clip of the exchange on social media, Mordaunt added: "In their quest for total incompetence, the SNP leaves no stone unturned".

The SNP said it is unable to verify whether the fragment actually came from the Stone of Destiny, also known as the Stone of Scone.

A spokesperson said: "The SNP has a small stone chip in storage.

"It is claimed to be a fragment of the Stone of Scone but, much like the stone in Edinburgh Castle, its provenance has not been established."

Mordaunt has found herself in weekly clashes with the SNP in the House of Commons.

Before the Commons broke for Christmas recess, Mordaunt accused the party of taking the "moral high ground" in a furious rant in the House of Commons.

She accused the party of having an "appalling record on destroying the education system".

This came after SNP MP Dierdre Brock criticised the Government's plans to cut down on legal migration by raising the threshold at which people can bring spouses to the UK.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Brock told the House of Commons: "The Government plumb new depths with their immigration panic measures, which are so damaging to Scotland in particular."

But Mordaunt demanded she look at her party's own record.
