He drew massive crowds, but not all of them were pleased to see the former Ukip chief.

This was made clear as he emerged from Wetherspoons to be met with a launched McDonald's milkshake cup.

The liquid splattered over his suit as he boarded his campaign bus.

Eye-witness Jo Sullivan told GB News: "It was a young girl, not very, old. As Nigel came down the steps. She threw a drink in his face and ran off.

"It hit him right in the face. It could have had something harmful in it and it’s disgusting."

Meanwhile, Lee Hellier said: "People have the right to protest but that’s disgusting."

Farage yesterday announced to a room full of reporters that he will be contesting the seat.

It was a U-turn for the 60-year-old, who initially said he would not be making a return to politics when Rishi Sunak first called the General Election.

But Farage admitted to feeling a sense of guilt over his decision and the lure of an eighth election campaign proved too much.

He told GB News last night that he is buoyant about his party's electoral prospects and is hoping to match the Tories in the polls within a week.

“Everyone knows that the election is over in terms of who wins”, he said.

“But I think what will happen is we will take equally from the Conservatives, Labour and non-voters.

“I would hope that within a week, we will be equal with the Conservatives and maybe ahead.

“And I think that is possible. It’s possible because it won’t just be Tories switching, it will be Labour too.”

Farage set about convincing voters to side with him by flocking to Clacton today where he was met with crowds.

He told those in attendance: "Send me to Parliament to be a bloody nuisance."

Officers have made two arrests after responding to reports of a drink being thrown at Farage.

A 25-year-old woman, from Clacton, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault.
