The former Brexit Party leader has proven himself to be an effective vote winner
Nigel Farage says he has explored a route back into politics, even going so far as estimating how successful he would perform at the next general election.
The former Brexit Party leader has proven himself to be an effective vote winner in the past, amassing the third highest total of votes at the 2015 general election with UKIP.
Farage told GB News he has polled the British public to gauge whether there is an appetite for his political return.
He told Patrick Christys: “I polled this recently, the figures say four million would vote for me tomorrow.
“That’s before any campaign or announcement that I am interested in doing it again.
“We can get that up to five million, we can get that up to 17/18 per cent of the national vote.
“I believe that even under First Past the Post (FPTP), that is achievable.”
The GB News presenter said that he harbours doubts over whether to return, as the nature of Britain’s electoral system means even a high share of the vote doesn’t guarantee a significant share of seats in the House of Commons.
“What is it going to get me? Am I going to bang my head against a brick wall?”, he asked.
“I won the 2014 European elections, the 2019 European elections under PR (proportional representation).
“If we had PR and a genuinely centre-right party that is focused around actually putting British people first, genuine border controls, delivering on Brexit and what we thought was achievable in terms of regulations and borders, then I think a party like that would get 25 per cent of the vote, and would hold the balance of power in Westminster.
“I don’t need to get back into politics, I’m perfectly happy with life as it is, but there is a growing public appetite for change.
“Over half the population think FPTP is out of date, the Daily Mail will say it delivers strong and stable government, well think about the last 13 years.
“Five years of it under this system was a coalition with the Lib Dems, and the last eight years have been utter chaos.
“If this is strong and stable government under FPTP, I’d rather try something different.”
It comes after Farage mooted a possible link-up with former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who has left the Tory Parliamentary party amid an investigation into Partygate.
The GB News presenter says the move would be an effective one in “defending their Brexit legacy”.
He said: "Would there be a possibility of a new coming together on the centre-right?
"It would be Boris Johnson, there would be other MPs that would join in with this as well."
He added: "I have discussed it with people very close to him and around him."
The GB News presenter also said that the former Prime Minister has gifted the Labour Party the constituency of Uxbridge & South Ruislip.
He told Camilla Tominey: "I think the anger that you saw there from Tobias Ellwood will become the mainstream view of the Conservative Party.
"I don't think he has got any future in the Conservative Party whatsoever.
"This idea that he would be allowed to fight a safer seat than Uxbridge...well hang on.
"He has effectively gifted Uxbridge to the Labour Party and who knows, the other seats could go to the Lib Dems.
"He will be seen to be doing damage to the party, his allies are calling for a civil war.”
