The former first minister’s arrest follows the arrest and subsequent release of her husband

Nicola Sturgeon has been dubbed a “national disgrace” by Neil Oliver following her arrest in connection with an ongoing investigation into SNP finances.

The former first minister was released without charge pending further investigation.

A spokeswoman for Sturgeon confirmed she had attended a police interview by arrangement on Sunday.

GB News host Neil Oliver said the ongoing scandal surrounding the party and Sturgeon’s arrest have been a “joy to watch”.

Speaking to Bev Turner and Andrew Pierce, he said: “The SNP are a bunch of clowns, and yesterday was finally the day the wheels fell off. That was terrific.

“This SNP reckoning, if it is one, has come too late, the damage is already done. It will be generations in the fixing.

“The SNP have sewn nothing but division and the consequences are writ large for the people of Scotland.”

The party has been under scrutiny over the past two years over what happened to more than £600,000 of donations given to the party by independence activists.

The spokeswoman said: "Nicola Sturgeon has today, Sunday 11 June, by arrangement with Police Scotland, attended an interview where she was to be arrested and questioned in relation to Operation Branchform.

"Nicola has consistently said she would cooperate with the investigation if asked and continues to do so."

Sturgeon was often critical of the British Government during her tenure, even calling former Prime Minister Boris Johnson a “national disgrace”.

Neil Oliver hit back at the remark during his interview on GB News, saying “what goes around comes around”.

“She’s a national disgrace to the people of Scotland”, he said.

“If this is the death knell for the Scottish National Party, if this is some kind of reckoning for Nicola Sturgeon and what she’s been up to for the last dozen years, then so be it.

“But when you live here, when you have seen what has happened to this proud country of Scotland under the bailiwick of the SNP, then you know it’s funny to watch from the outside, but if you live here, the joke has been on us.”

The arrest follows the arrest and subsequent release of her husband, ex-SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, in April.

Sturgeon’s home was searched by officers on 5 April along with the SNP’s headquarters. Murrell was arrested before being released without charge pending further investigation.

A luxury motorhome which sells for about £110,000 was also seized by police from outside the home of Murrell’s mother in Dunfermline.

SNP treasurer was arrested weeks later before being released without charge while further inquiries were carried out.

Beattie resigned as party treasurer soon after.

Sturgeon, Murrell ad Beattie were the three signatories on the SNP’s accounts and the former first minister’s arrest has long been expected.

A spokesman for the SNP said the party would not comment on Sturgeon’s arrest, saying: “These issues are subject to a live police investigation.”
