The former First Minister confirmed she will not seek re-election to Holyrood earlier this month

Nicola Sturgeon has been cleared of any wrongdoing in Police Scotland's probe into SNP finances.

Ex-SNP treasurer Colin Beattie, who was arrested and questioned before being released without charge in 2023, is also now no longer under investigation.

However, Sturgeon's husband Peter Murrell appeared in court today charged with embezzlement following Police Scotland's Operation Branchform probe.

Murrell, who separated from Sturgeon earlier this year, made no plea to the single charge during his appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

The 60-year-old was granted bail with his next court appearance yet to be confirmed.

Murrell, who became the SNP's chief executive from 1999, resigned from his post in March 2023 following a row over party numbers.

He was arrested by Police Scotland just one month later, with the embezzling charge being brought against him in 2024.

Police Scotland's investigation is linked to the spending of around £600,000 raised by SNP supporters to be earmarked for Scottish independence campaigning.

In an update, a Police Scotland spokesman said: "Following direction from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, criminal enquiries into two people arrested as part of the investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party have now concluded.

"The 73-year-old man arrested on 18 April 2023, and the 54-year-old woman arrested on 11 June 2023, have not been charged and are no longer under investigation."

Sturgeon confirmed her separation from Murrell in a social media post in January.

The Glasgow Southside MSP revealed the couple had been "separated for some time now" but "still care deeply for each other and always will".

Sturgeon met Murrell while the pair were grassroots SNP activists in 1988.

They became a couple in 2003, later tying the knot in 2010.

Sturgeon has also confirmed she will not seek re-election to the Scottish Parliament, having first been elected to Holyrood in 1999.

The 54-year-old succeeded the late Alex Salmond as SNP leader following the 'Yes' campaign's defeat in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.

She led the nationalist party to a landslide victory north of the border in 2015 and only left Bute House in March 2023.
