Former Vote Leave chief executive Matthew Elliott was among the leading Brexiteers included in the former Prime Minister’s resignation honours list

Remain-supporters have been left fuming after a number of Brexit-backers were given peerages and honours by ex-Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Truss nominated Conservative donor Jon Moynihan and ex-Vote Leave chief Matthew Elliott for seats in the Lords.

The South West Norfolk MP, who spent just 49 days in Downing Street, also sought to elevate her former deputy chief of staff Ruth Porter to the upper chamber.

Truss handed a number of allies other honours, including Thurrock MP Jacqueline Doyle-Price, Defence Procurement Minister Alec Shelbrooke, Stourbridge MP Suzanne Webb and Aylsebury MP Robert Butler.

Despite Remainers' complaints about Brexiteers being rewarded, Butler was the only one of the four MPs who supported the UK severing ties with Brussels in 2016.

Europhiles have taken to social media to moan about Truss' honours.

Labour MP Chris Bryant said: “Just bear in mind that the new Truss peer Matthew Elliott founded the Conservative Friends of Russia group. He now gets to write our laws for life.”

Bryant's comments sparked further backlash on social media, with The Spectator's political correspondent accusing him of "spreading misinformation online".

Carol Vorderman added: “Liz Truss rewards Tufton St for crashing our economy and adding more suffering to the many for the champagne celebrations of the few.”

Former Bath MP Ben Howlett, who opposed Brexit in 2016 before losing his seat the following year, complained: “The Honours system in this country needs a total overhaul.

“When men like Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield are overlooked for a knighthood and the man who orchestrated Brexit gets one…it frankly stinks!”

Liz Webster, an anti-Tory campaigner determined to drag Britain back into the single market, wrote: “Imagine being rewarded for crashing the economy and causing mortgage misery for millions?”

LGBT+ campaigner Peter Tatchell added: “Rishi Sunak approved ousted Prime Minister Liz Truss being allowed to give honours to Tory cronies: an architect of Brexit, a Tory donor & her former deputy chief of staff The honours system is tainted and corrupt, which is I why I would never want one.”

Labour and the Liberal Democrats have also complained about Truss' resignation honours and peerages.

Labour's Shadow Cabinet Office Minister Jonathan Ashworth said: "This list is proof positive of Rishi Sunak's weakness and a slap in the face to working people who are paying the price of the Tories crashing the economy.

"Honours should be for those committed to public service, not rewards for Tory failure."

Deputy Liberal Democrat leader Daisy Cooper added: "Truss handing out gongs after blowing a hole in the public finances and leaving families reeling from spiralling mortgage costs calls this whole honours system into disrepute."
