Miriam Cates has blasted the current taxation system for families.
Speaking at the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) Conference, she said: “The raw cost of childcare is not particularly different to other parts of the world, it's just we take so much tax off families that it's then a bigger proportion of their cost. That's where we're going wrong. Why are we taxing families far more harshly than many other Western countries? Why are we taxing families far more harshly than single people?
“At very At the very least, the tax system should be neutral. And you shouldn't be considerably worse off when you have a child or when one partner earns more than the other.
“The whole system is wrong. What we should be doing instead, if we're going to support families through any system, whether that's tax, child benefit, childcare, give families that money as cash or voucher or tax credit to choose what they want to do with it, to choose how they bring up their child."
