Bob Seely predicted Labour would "do incredibly badly" in the upcoming local elections

Conservative MP Bob Seely has warned that the Labour Party is set to receive "the mother of all wake-up calls" at Thursday's polls amid growing public frustration over the migrant crisis.

Speaking to GB News, the Isle of Wight MP predicted Labour would "do incredibly badly" in the upcoming elections as voters express anger over the government's handling of illegal Channel crossings.

Seely told GB News: "Look, I mean, this government came in without a clue, but with a lot of left-wing prejudices. I think there's an issue with the ideology of the left.

"I'll come to that first, just in defence of the last government. Clearly, we didn’t get a grip. It wasn't enough, and there’s more we should have done, not only on the ECHR, but also on the Human Rights Act and the equality laws.

"There’s a complex of laws we needed to unpick, and we didn’t do enough of that. To our credit, we kept passing laws and kept trying to fight.

"We had the Rwanda plan, but we didn’t manage to bring it into effect. Now we’re seeing what happens when you compare a government that tried to get a grip on a problem with one that, frankly, didn’t think it was a problem.

"I think, come Thursday, the Labour Party is going to get the mother of all wake-up calls, not just in Runcorn, but across the country. I think they’re going to do incredibly badly.

"Underpinning the left's thinking is this idea that anyone who comes here is a victim. Anyone who comes here should be eligible for asylum.

"Especially if someone is not white, they are seen as a victim of the West, of racism, of imperialism, or of slavery, or something like that.

"That mindset means we don’t see these people as individuals who may have broken the law. And if they have broken the law, they should be in the dock the next day, in prison, and then sent back. But that’s just not happening."

His comments come as illegal Channel crossings reach a critical milestone, fuelling public concern about border security.

Small boat crossings have now surpassed 10,000 in 2025, representing a 40 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

The grim milestone was reached when Border Force vessel Hurricane arrived in Dover harbour with 71 migrants onboard, followed by a further 279 arrivals later in the day.

Calm conditions in the Channel have led to a fresh surge of small boat launches.

A Home Office spokesman said: “We all want to end dangerous small boat crossings, which threaten lives and undermine our border security.

“The people-smuggling gangs do not care if the vulnerable people they exploit live or die, as long as they pay and we will stop at nothing to dismantle their business models and bring them to justice.

“That’s why this government is investing in border security, increasing returns to their highest levels for more than half a decade, and imposing a major crackdown on illegal working to end the false promise of jobs used by gangs to sell spaces on boats.

"We have already secured agreement from the French to deploy a new elite unit of officers at the coast, launch a specialist intelligence unit, increase police numbers and introduce new powers for the French authorities to intervene in shallow waters."
