Voters will determine who replaced Nadine Dorries tomorrow

Voters head to the polls in Mid Bedfordshire tomorrow with a chance to pick a new MP to represent them in Westminster.

The commuter belt constituency is still reeling from the hangover former MP Nadine Dorries left residents nursing after she spent eighteen years in the job.

Dorries resigned in August after a row erupted within the Tory party when a peerage Boris Johnson recommended her for was refused.

The by-election offers a new start for residents in commuter towns like Shefford, Flitwick, and Ampthill where voters have been sharing their expectations of a new MP.

Top priorities include pollution, infrastructure, and availability of GPs.

Valerie Bushnell, aged 78, from Ampthill said: “Somebody that lives here would be nice. Someone that actually tries to do things around the county.”

She added the issues that matter are: “Getting to see the doctor, which I seem to be doing a lot lately. Although, I’m not doing too badly at the moment, but it can be difficult.”

Nick Carney and his wife Steph from Ampthill said: “Qualities I want is the MP to be a good constituency MP who looks after the constituents unlike the last one that we had who quite frankly was a nightmare.”

“I’m looking forward to having an MP that knows about local issues and does something about them.”

Dawn Brooks urged the new MP to 'think of the local people'

Dawn Brooks moved to Ampthill recently from Leicester. She said: “Whoever’s going to be in power think of the local people and stop thinking of your own selves for a change.”

She continued: “We need someone to be honest and when you make promises, please keep them. Stop making promises and then denying it at the end of the day.”

Former culture secretary Nadine Dorries won the 2019 election with a majority of 24,664 votes. Mid Bedfordshire has remained under a tight Tory grip since 1931.

But a memo leaked to Sky News from the office of Conservative Party Chairman Greg Hands points to a 30 per cent decrease in voter share for the Tories in Mid Beds.

The leak will embolden Labour and the Liberal Democrats who are chasing victory in the seat hoping traditional Conservative will abandon the party on polling day.

Mid Bedfordshire is one of two by-elections being held on Thursday 19th October with a second in Tamworth.

Chris Pincher was suspended from the Staffordshire seat triggering a by-election after he allegedly groped two men at an exclusive social club last year.
