The former Prime Minister was promoting her book at an event in rural Suffolk

Liz Truss stormed off stage last night as the former Prime Minister’s book promotion event was interrupted by pranksters unfurling a brutal lettuce banner.

Truss, who lost her South West Norfolk seat to Labour by just 630 votes, was voicing support for Donald Trump when the stunt unfolded.

She was initially oblivious as the banner saying “I crashed the economy” dropped down behind her.

Following some chuckles in Beccles Public Hall, Truss' head turned and a minder walked on from backstage.

“What’s that?” the bespectacled man asked while pointing his finger at the lettuce.

The host replied: “I have no idea where that’s come from.”

People were heard laughing as Truss shuffled questions and looked appalled.

The ex-Prime Minister left her seat, placed the questions on the table and removed her microphone.

“That’s not funny,” Truss said before storming off stage.

Audience members started clapping as the host stood up to take a closer look at the stunt.

Left-wing activist group Led By Donkeys claimed responsibility for the prank, adding: “We just dropped in on Liz Truss' pro-Trump speaking tour with a remote-controlled lettuce banner. She didn’t find it funny.”

Truss' 49-day premiership has become synonymous with lettuces after she was forced to quit No10 before a Daily Star acquired iceberg expired in 2022.

She previously described the lettuce debacle as “puerile” and claimed the media did not understand her ideas.

The market was rocked by Truss' disastrous mini-budget which saw her £45billion package of unfunded tax cuts trigger mass market turmoil.

Truss' defeat last month ensured the ex-MP joins a small list of former Prime Ministers who have gone on to lose their seats shortly after leaving Downing Street.

She was mocked during her count in South West Norfolk with a slow clap after appearing reluctant to get on stage.

Local Labour MP Terry Jermy revealed: “What most people don’t realise is that they actually finished counting at about 5am and they were sort of shuffling around with tables and papers whilst we were waiting for Liz Truss to make her way to the count.

“It was only about 6.30am that she arrived anywhere near and so we were all sort of waiting around doing nothing and all the counting had finished for quite a long while.

“When she got to the building, we were all given a sign as candidates to go on stage with the High Sheriff, but even then we were on stage for what felt like an eternity and she was still not appearing on the stage.

“That’s when people started slow hand clapping and started to get a bit restless – not Labour Party people I hasten to add.”

Truss told the Telegraph that she had avoided attending the count for an extended period of time on election night because “there were various dubious journalists from the BBC there”.

However, Truss has looked to use her book to remain relevant on the world stage.

She appeared at the Republican National Convention just days after Donald Trump’s failed assassination attempt.

Truss threw her weight behind the 45th President’s re-election bid but also made a bizarre remark about shower heads.

The former Prime Minister also exploded at the EU and UK for “attacks on free speech”, defending Elon Musk from “bullies” in Brussels and Westminster.

However, her support for the Tesla CEO came just three days after Musk made a “lettuce” jibe about Truss.

GB News has approached Truss for comment.
