Labour’s Pat McFadden refused to be drawn on whether specific taxes will be raised under a Keir Starmer-led government.

McFadden joined Camilla Tominey on GB News to declare that a “tax here or tax there isn’t really going to change the fortunes of the UK”.

Camilla grilled him on the matter and said Labour’s threat of “secret taxes” is something the electorate are often concerned about.

Asked about Sir Keir Starmer refusing to rule out taxes on things such as pension, McFadden delivered a cryptic response.

“There is nothing in our plans that requires any further tax increases”, he said.

An exasperated Camilla questioned why he “can’t rule it out”.

She added: “Will you increase Council Tax or re-band Council Tax?”, to which he responded: “There’s already, under Tory plans, an assumption that Council Tax will go up.

“Nothing in our plans requested Council Tax to go up.”

Asked if people’s homes will be taxed, he delivered a similar response, saying: “There is nothing in our plans that requires that.”

Noting the frequent response offered up by the Labour candidate, Camilla commented: “Nothing in our plans and ruling it out are two different things?”

He responded: “There are probably 200 different taxes. This is the Tory tactic, a scare story about Labour.

“In many of the cases, they’ve increased taxes on these things themselves, especially on pensioners.

“It’s about 3.5 million more pensioners paying tax today compared to when the Tories first took power.”

McFadden went on to insist that Labour is “putting economic growth at the heart of its plans”.

The Tories have used potential tax rises as a stick to beat Labour with in the weeks leading up to the General Election.

Sunak said: “It’s clear that Labour would do irreversible damage within just 100 days of coming to power.

“Whether it’s announcing a suite of tax rises or throwing thousands of families’ plans for the autumn term into chaos, with children wondering if they will have a desk at school to go back to.

“Labour would throw open our borders with their illegal migrant amnesty and free movement for under-30s in their deal with the EU, making us the soft touch migrant capital of the world.

“They cannot be trusted. We must not surrender our taxes, our borders and our security to them. Only the Conservatives will deliver tax cuts, a growing economy and a brighter, more secure future for everyone.”
