Sir Keir Starmer has condemned the assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania and sent him his “best wishes”.

The 45th President was just 10 minutes into his speech in Butler when the event was interrupted by gunshots at around 6.13pm.

Trump, 78, appeared to clutch his face and ducked to the floor as he was quickly surrounded by Secret Service agents.

He was carried away from the podium but stopped to raise a fist as blood was splattered across his face from his ear. He then left the scene in a motorcade.

One person at the rally was killed and another was injured.

The newly elected Prime Minister was among the first leaders to condone the attack and send his support to Trump.

He said: “I am appalled by the shocking scenes at President Trump’s rally and we send him and his family our best wishes.

“Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack.”

Joe Biden, Trump’s rival, has slammed the “sick” attack on the former President.

He said: “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence.”

In a written statement from the White House, Biden said he was “grateful to hear” that Trump was “safe and doing well”.

The statement added: “I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.”

Trump himself has since released a statement.

Posting on his Truth social media, he extended his condolences to the family members of the man who was killed and the other who was injured.

He said: “I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.

“It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country.”

He went on to confirm that the shooter, a suspected 20-year-old from Pennsylvania, was now dead.

Trump continued: “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.

“Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
