Keir Starmer has reportedly breached parliamentary rules by not declaring a wealthy businessman and Labour Party donor bought high-end clothes for his wife Victoria

Labour frontbenchers have sought to defend Sir Keir Starmer after the Prime Minister was accused or breaching parliamentary rules.

The Prime Minister is facing a potential investigation after failing to declare clothing donations made to his wife, Victoria.

The gifts, provided by prominent Labour donor Lord Alli, were not initially registered in the MP's interests list as required.

The donations reportedly covered the cost of a personal shopper, clothes, and alterations for Lady Starmer, both before and after Labour's election victory in July.

Rushing to the Prime Minister's defence, cabinet minister Nick Thomas-Symonds told GB News: "In terms of being the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and being the Prime Minister's spouse, I think we would agree we would want them to look at their very best."

However, Camilla Tominey questioned the timing of the donations, claiming some occurred before Starmer became Prime Minister.

She also raised concerns about Lord Alli's Downing Street pass, asking: "Why else would he have been given this pass if it wasn't as a thank you for some of these cash gifts?"

Thomas-Symonds responded: "Lord Ali is a self-made millionaire. He's a long standing donor. That's a matter of public record to the Labour Party.

"He's someone who has been a member of the House of Lords since 1998, has a substantial record of public service in that time, over 25 years in the House of Lords and was, as I understand it, given a pass for a short period of a few weeks for the transition.

"But he is somebody who's been in our Parliament for over a quarter of a century."

He added: "This is hardly a case of things being hidden. On the contrary, , the Prime Minister is attempting to be transparent. Advice was sought on coming to office as to what was appropriate to donate. The advice was followed, but that advice was then doubted.

"Further interrogation took place. That was earlier this month and now that additional declaration will be made."

The Conservative Party has demanded a full investigation into Starmer's conduct and his links with Lord Alli.

A party spokesman said: "It's taken just 10 weeks for Keir Starmer to face an investigation for his conduct. After facing allegations of cronyism and now apparent serious breaches of parliamentary rules there must be a full investigation into the passes for glasses scandal."

The Tories also criticised Labour's recent policy decisions, adding: "No doubt the millions of vulnerable pensioners across the country who face choosing between heating and eating would jump at the chance for free clothes just to keep warm in the face of Labour's cruel cut."

Lord Alli's involvement with the Labour leader has already sparked controversy. The peer, who has donated £500,000 to Labour since 2020, was given a Downing Street security pass without apparently having a government role.

This incident, dubbed the "passes for glasses" affair, raised eyebrows as Lord Alli had previously donated tens of thousands of pounds worth of clothing, accommodation, and "multiple pairs" of spectacles to Starmer.

The Sunday Times reported that Alli has given Sir Keir £18,685 of work clothes and several pairs of glasses in the past year, as well as spending £20,000 on his accommodation during the general election campaign.

A No10 spokeswoman addressed the issue, stating: "We sought advice from the authorities on coming to office. We believed we had been compliant, however, following further interrogation this month, we have declared further items."
