The Prime Minister is facing a potential investigation after failing to declare clothing donations made to his wife

Reform MP Lee Anderson has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Keir Starmer, branding him "the UK's number one sponger" over the recent clothing donations scandal.

Speaking to GB News, Anderson criticised Starmer's acceptance of gifts despite his high income, stating: "The guy is now probably the UK's number one sponger. I mean, look at that list. There's £100,000. No other political leader is accepting gifts."

The Prime Minister has faced criticism for the scandal dubbed "wardrobegate" which centres on gifts provided to Lady Victoria Starmer by Labour donor Lord Alli.

According to reports, Lord Alli paid for high-end clothes, a personal shopper, and garment alterations for the Prime Minister's wife.

Starmer allegedly failed to declare these gifts within the required 28-day timeframe, breaching parliamentary rules.

The Sunday Times reported that the Prime Minister approached parliamentary authorities last Tuesday to make a late declaration after receiving updated advice.

Speaking to Martin Daubney, he said: "He is very good at redistributing people's income, just not his own. It's absolutely disgraceful, actually.

"If this has been Boris Johnson or Rishi Sunak or any of the other prime ministers, they'd have been going crazy over this."

The controversy has drawn parrels to previous scandals in politics, such as Boris Johnson's Downing Street flat refurbishment.

Lee Anderson pointed out: "That was actually wallpaper being put into Downing Street. That's a public building that belongs to the taxpayer. He's off on freebies."

This follows Starmer's previous breach of the MPs' code of conduct in 2022, when he failed to register eight interests in time.

The Prime Minister has responded to the allegations, insisting that rules are being followed and emphasising the importance of transparency.

Speaking to reporters, Starmer said: "It's very important to me that rules are followed and that we have transparency.

"That's why, shortly after the election, my team reached out for advice on what declaration should be made, so it's in accordance with the rules."

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper defended Starmer, stating that "donations are always declared in the proper way".

However, the controversy continues to unfold.

Lady Victoria Starmer was recently spotted at London Fashion Week, attending the Edeline Lee show amidst the ongoing row over her outfits.
