The former Chancellor tied the knot with ex-Treasury aide Thea Rogers in Bruton, Somerset

Just Stop Oil have officially distanced themselves from the confetti-throwing woman who appeared at George Osborne's wedding in Somerset yesterday.

A grey-haired woman appeared to leave the couple confused as she doused the pair in orange confetti as they left Bruton's 14th Century St Mary’s Church.

In a statement, the climate change campaign group said: "The lady who threw confetti in Bruton yesterday was upholding a tradition that is common across many cultures.

"We absolutely defend the right for people to throw confetti (of whatever colour) at weddings and other celebrations.

"If it was a form of protest — which is yet to be established — we applaud it and thank the person concerned.

"It was peaceful and not especially disruptive, but got massive media attention for Just Stop Oil’s demand.

"It has also helped people to recall that George Osborne, one of the main architects of economic austerity, is directly responsible for over 300,000 excess deaths, and that — as a newspaper editor — he was responsible for some of the most egregious climate-denying nonsense ever to darken the pages of mainstream mass media.

"However, as much as we applaud the use of orange confetti at this wedding, we were not responsible."

Just Stop Oil yesterday posted a social media update mocking the ex-Chancellor following the protest.

The group wrote on Twitter: "You look good in orange George Osborne - Congratulations to the newlyweds."

However, Just Stop Oil rejected repeated requests to comment on the matter.

The eco-zealots were slammed for seemingly endorsing the protest, with with ex-Home Secretary Priti Patel labelling the supposed protester "shameful".

Osborne and Rogers' wedding was attended by several Tory big wigs, including ex-Prime Minister David Cameron and Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove.

Despite distancing themselves from the lone eco-activist, Just Stop Oil have used orange as a symbol of its activism.

The group stormed Wimbledon's hallowed turf on Wednesday, disrupting two matches on Court 18 by throwing confetti and jigsaw pieces across the grass.

Activists were also apprehended after disrupting the first over of England’s second Ashes test against Australia at Lord’s last week.

Just Stop Oil made similar interventions at the World Snooker Championship and Gallagher Premiership final at Twickenham.
