Jeremy Corbyn has hinted that he would consider running as an independent candidate in the next election, after he was banned from standing as a Labour MP

Corbyn didn’t rule out running for in his constituency of Islington North – which has held for 40 years.

In March, the 74-year-old was banned from standing as a Labour candidate in the north London constituency at the next general election.

Sir Keir Starmer expelled Corbyn from the parliamentary Labour Party in October 2020, after the former leader refused to accept the findings of an investigation into antisemitism in the Labour party during his time in charge.

The former Labour leader also said that he wouldn’t run for Mayor of London “at the moment”, hinting that this could be a possibility in the future.

Corbyn, in an interview with Bloomberg, also urged his successor to be bolder with Labour’s policies.

He called the party “too timid”.

He also said they need to offer a stronger alternative to the Tories if the opposition wants to return to power.

“Labour has to offer, I believe, a much more radical economic alternative which does start to address these massive levels of inequality in Britain which have gotten worse particularly since Covid.”

Whilst Corbyn consented that Labour will “probably” win the next general election, he said it will not be off the basis of Labour’s own policies.

Instead, it will be because of the “unpopularity of the Conservative government”.

He called on his former party to pledge public ownership policies of utilities such as water, as well as offering a taxation policy that redistributes wealth from the rich to the poor.

The opposition leader is currently 20 points ahead of Rishi Sunak in national polling, with Labour presently beating the Conservatives ahead of the next general election.

Corbyn, on the political left of the party, led Labour from 2015 to 2020.

In 2019, he led labour to its worst defeat since 1935, where the party gained just 32.2 per cent of the vote.

Starmer has since steered the party towards the centre, a position that Tony Blair guided the party to which led to three successive victories.
