The former Labour leader said the causes behind the attack needed to be looked at

Jeremy Corbyn refused to condemn attack son Israel last night as he appeared to shift the blame on Israel.

An offensive on Israel launched by Hamas, a terror proscribed organisation by the British Government, has left at least 600 dead, including a British man serving in the Israeli army.

The former Labour leader failed to directly criticise Hamas's deadly assault which took place over the weekend while attending events at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool.

Instead he said that he did not "support any attacks".

Speaking at an event organised by The World Transformed festival - a forum taking place alongside Labour's official conference and organised by the Corbyn-supporting Momentum organisation - the Islington North MP went further and suggested that Israel was at fault for the attack.

"You don’t just condemn – as I do – any acts of violence, anywhere around the world. You look at the causes as well," he said.

"The way to end that, I think, is to end the occupation in Palestine, by Israel."

Corbyn was cheered by the gathered crowd as he made his remarks.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Yesterday he was also due to speak at events on nuclear disarmament but was turned away at the door after failing to register for a pass to the Labour Party Conference.

Corbyn faced backlash when he was Labour leader after video footage emerged of him having invited Hamas into the Houses of Parliament.

"It will be my pleasure and honour to host an event in parliament where our friends from Hezbollah will be speaking," he said in a video from 2009.
"I’ve also invited our friends from Hamas to come and speak as well."

He later said he regretted his choice of words.

While the former Labour leader is no longer a part of the parliamentary Labour party after having been suspended by Sir Keir Starmer in 2020, he remains a member of the wider movement.

Speaking this morning shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said there was no chance of Corbyn being welcomed back as a Labour MP.

"Jeremy Corbyn is no longer a Labour MP because of the antisemitism that he allowed to take root in the Labour Party," she said in an interview with LBC.

"And I’m so proud that we’ve got, in Keir Starmer, a leader who stands squarely alongside Israel at their moment of need, and has rooted out antisemitism from my party, the Labour Party."
