In an intimate and revelatory interview with Dan Wootton, the renowned politician opens up on chatting up his wife, not knowing what to do with a pair of jeans and being a push-over parent

To celebrate his new show on GB News, Jacob Rees-Mogg allowed viewers a fascinating glimpse into his London home, revealing walls groaning with oil paintings, bookshelves containing an unauthorised biography of David Cameron and the monogrammed handkerchief of King Charles I, stained with blood from his execution.

Questioned initially by Dan over the authenticity of the image he presents to the world, Rees-Mogg gave a frank reply: "Would anybody have adopted my image out of a creation, a confection? I think that's very unlikely, so I'd better be what I really am."

"I'm not much different in private from the public view," he added.

Next on the interview agenda was the politician’s famous sartorial standard.

Rees-Mogg explained he has a wardrobe full of the same two styles of double-breasted suit. ‘I've got a dark blue one and dark grey one.

And one time it's one, and one time it’s the other.’ The Tory minister also revealed he doesn’t dress down.

"What would I do with a pair of jeans?" he quipped, before admitting he probably has a pair "somewhere".

Nor is Rees-Mogg’s choice of trainer the most cutting edge: "I've got a pair of green flash shoes," he continued, "which I occasionally put on if my children bully me into playing cricket with them."

During the unfailingly honest chat, Rees-Mogg opened up about his family life, revealing how he wooed his wife with a unique line of chat.

"‘My sister Annunziata introduced me to Hannah. We started talking and I'm afraid I mainly talked about Hannah's ancestor Thomas Wentworth and Hannah thought, ‘who's this rather odd fellow who knows more about my family history than I do?’’

Declaring himself "very lucky" the father-of-six, who touchingly retains the services of the same nanny who looked after him as a little boy, declared himself a soft touch when it comes to parenting.

"My children have me wrapped around their little finger", he said.

"‘I give into them the whole time. I give in straight away before being asked really. I'm a complete pushover."

The die-hard Brexiteer shared that although the referendum was the highlight of his political career, he would not deem it the most exciting day of his life.

This accolade was reserved for an event much closer to home. "The birth of children is, I mean, the most remarkable thing that ever, ever happens," he said.

"This sudden creation of, of the appearance of new life is really very wonderful."
