Liz Truss will launch the Popular Conservatism movement at a conference in London on Tuesday

Conservative MP and GB News presenter Jacob Rees-Mogg has shared his support for the latest Conservative movement ahead of its launch on Tuesday.

Former Prime Minister Liz Truss will launch the "Popular Conservatism" project, also known as PopCon, at a conference in London.

The aim of the Tory group, as stated on their X page, is to "restore democratic accountability to Britain and deliver popular conservative policies".

Alongside Jacob Rees-Mogg, other Conservative MPs are set to attend the event including fellow GB News presenters Lee Anderson and Nigel Farage.

Director of the group Mark Littlewood said in The Telegraph that "it's time to give people their freedom back".

The group have a "twofold mission" to "inform and educate" candidates and MPs about the need to "reform Britain’s bureaucratic structures" to allow Conservatives values to flourish.

Sharing his support for the movement, Tory MP and GB News host Jacob Rees-Mogg said it is about "reinvigorating the popular element of democracy", and "replicates the approach to popular conservatism that Margaret Thatcher had".

Jacob said members of the public are "welcome to come along and get involved" in the movement at the PopCon launch event.

Reacting to Jacob's comments, host Eamonn Holmes swiped at the MP, joking: "With all due respect my friend, you don't look overly excited about this today - you're not bursting with enthusiasm!

"If you're happy about it, let your face know it! I'm just saying, I'm looking at you here and i'm thinking does this man actually believe in this today?"

Jacob hit back at Eamonn, stating: "You're thinking of interviewing somebody else - I've never been somebody who hopped up and down either in joy or in displeasure.

"I've always thought it was an English virtue not showing too much emotion under most circumstances, so no I'm not going to go hooping and hollering around the place - but I am delighted by this, I think it's a very exciting opportunity!"

Eamonn responded: "But you've got to make it contagious, don't you!"

Jacob hit back: "Well contagion isn't necessarily the right word, it brings up ideas of diseases and things like this. This isn't a disease, this is about what people want and it's about people having the chance to lead their own lives, to be in charge of their own success.

"And to ensure that the country is governed to improve people's standard of living, and it's not delegated to bodies like the World Health Organisation, which we hear so much about, or the European Court of Human Rights, or to the endless quangos that interfere in our lives.

He continued: "That's the thing about Popular Conservatism. It's about reinvigorating the popular element of democracy that as Margaret Thatcher, once said, is fundamentally Conservative."
