Conservative leadership candidate Robert Jenrick has announced he will appoint Sir Jacob-Rees Mogg as chairman of the party if he wins election.

The former immigration minister said that he would make the appointments one of his first acts as leader, stating it was important to overhaul the Conservative Party's central office in order to reconnect with members of the party.

As party chairman he would be put in charge of campaigning operations.

Rees-Mogg lost his seat at the last general election but remains widely popular with Conservatives.

Just weeks before the Tories suffered their worst parliamentary defeat in decades, Rees-Mogg was voted “most popular backbencher” by readers of the grassroots publication Conservative Home.

"Jacob has been a tireless campaigner for the grassroots," Jenrick told The Telegraph as he explained his decision.

"He understands better than anyone the need for party reform."

The leadership candidate added: "One of my first acts as leader would be to appoint him as chairman of the party so we can truly reform and democratise our party.

"Together we will empower members and restore the respect that has been so sorely lacking in recent years."

Conservative Party chairman is a role usually filled by a Tory MP or peer but holding a seat in parliament is not a technical requirement for the role.

Rees-Mogg endorsed Jenrick to be leader during his GB News show earlier this week.

The former North East Somerset MP said that the 42-year-old was the person best placed to "steal Nigel [Farage's] clothes".

He said: "Who do we want to lead us to the next general election? Who do we think can take on the Reverend Starmer?

"Who will be able to converse with Nigel Farage and see where that may go one way or another? Who can steal Nigel’s clothes, if necessary, which may be the best way of going about it?

“Well, I’ve come to the conclusion that that person is Robert Jenrick.”

Despite his endorsement, Rees-Mogg also gave prise to Badenoch, stating: "I think Kemi Badenoch has many virtues.

"She is highly capable, her campaign against woke has been extraordinarily impressive."

He added: "I think the Conservatives need to come together after the result and support whoever wins."
