After polls close at 10pm UK time, votes will be counted in all 650 constituencies across the country.

The electoral system operates on a first past the post methodology, meaning each constituency has one MP. In order to achieve a majority in government, a party will need to win 326 constituencies, also known as seats.

If no party achieves higher than 326, then a situation of no overall control occurs, commonly referred to as a "Hung Parliament." This has happened twice in the 21st century, once in 2010 and again in 2017.

Constituencies in Sunderland and Newcastle traditionally go head-to-head to be the first to declare their results, with the record set in Sunderland at 42 minutes and 45 seconds at the 2005 election. However, most constituencies will not declare their results until the early hours of Friday morning.
