The MP for Tatton was given a major role in Rishi Sunak’s Cabinet

Esther McVey has announced her resignation from GB News with immediate effect.

The MP for Tatton was yesterday given a major role in Rishi Sunak’s Cabinet, with her main role said to be “speaking common sense” on behalf of the Government. As a result, Esther is unable to carry out presenting duties because of the ministerial code.

McVey had been presenting on The People’s Channel since August 2022 alongside her husband and fellow Conservative MP Philip Davies.

Speaking on her departure, she told GB News it was “far from an easy decision”.

“Yesterday, the Prime Minister asked me to join his Government to help bring about the common sense changes the country needs”, she said.

“Given the scale of the challenges we face, it is incumbent on all fo us to do what we can, and I will roll up my sleeves and do my best for the Government and the country.

“But this was far from an easy decision for me to make as it means relinquishing my role on GB News - in particular presenting a show I love with Phil.

“I don’t think it is a coincidence that when the Prime Minister looked for a champion for common sense, he selected someone from GB News - the home for common sense.

“I will miss working with the fantastic team of people there and engaging with the loyal viewers who are the salty of the earth of the country.

“I will do all I can to ensure I don’t let any of you down.”

McVey will be taking a hands on role in Sunak’s Government, with duties including frequent appearances on TV and radio.

Sources suggest her appointment is a key component of the Government’s “anti-woke” agenda.

Sunak’s radical Cabinet revamp saw him bring former Prime Minister David Cameron back into the fold as Foreign Secretary.

Lord Cameron has been at odds with the Prime Minister on a number of issues, raising question marks over how their relationship will work.

His appointment was made possible by the departing James Cleverly, who was made Home Secretary after Suella Braverman’s controversial sacking.

The Prime Minister is dealing with a Tory backlash over his decision to rid his Cabinet of Braverman given her ardent commitment to dealing with the migrant crisis.

She was sacked days after publishing an unauthorised Op-Ed criticising the police.
