After Reform were only able to gather one per cent of the Commons seats share with 14 per cent of the vote, calls for a change in the electoral system will undoubtedly come about once more.

The Liberal Democrats saw the First Past the Post system play in their favour as they won 71 seats, a huge increase on its previous total of 11, despite winning less votes overall than Reform.

The system has been in place for a significant portion of Britain’s history and is often celebrated for its ability to deliver strong governments.

However, the likes of Nigel Farage will point to the fact that it has delivered minority and coalition governments in recent decades which negates the aforementioned argument.

COMMENT NOW - Should we do away with the system in favour of a more proportional form of electing governments?
