The president-elect is set to be inaugurated on Monday

Watch the moment Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey bursts out laughing as he is asked whether Nigel Farage is “needed” for the UK to harbour positive ties with the incoming Donald Trump administration.

The president-elect is set to be inaugurated on Monday and given his friendship with the Reform UK leader, many have suggested utilising him.

But Davey made it clear on GB News he feels a “bootlicking” approach would be ill-advised.

Asked by Ellie Costello whether Farage is the ‘perfect conduit’, Davey burst into a fit of laughter.

“Just read what Trump says. When people are so sycophantic and want to lick his boots and be his best mate, that’s not how you do good deals”, he told GB News.

“Anyone knows that who has been in business. I have done plenty of deals in different guises and you have to be strong. Farage is so weak.

“Trump knows he wants to pursue Trump’s interest in the UK rather than the UK’s interests in the US.

“What the Liberal Democrats are saying is, we want to stand up for our brilliant nation. We don’t want to do Trump’s business, which is what Farage seems to do.

“I understand where Farage is coming from, he wants to privatise the NHS and Trump wants a trade deal so they can bring American healthcare into the UK, I don’t want that.

“We want to protect our NHS from privatisation. I can see why Trump is close to Farage, they have the same views on things like the NHS. He also wants a deal where American farmers can sell their produce into the UK and undermine British farmers.

“I want to stand up to British farmers, Farage doesn’t want to.”

Davey admitted he is ‘worried’ about the incoming Trump administration, telling Stephen Dixon and Ellie Costello he expects the Republican to launch trade wars.

“What he’s been saying is not going to be good for the world economy, the British economy, if he pursues trade wars and tariffs”, he said.

“He doesn’t seem to want to support Ukraine in the way that I think most British people do and certainly Liberal Democrats want to do.

“I’m genuinely worried about the impact on our prosperity and our security. What I think we need to do is learn the lessons of last time.”

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has expressed worry about the impact of Trump's planned 20 per cent levy on all US imports.

"It's going to be a challenging time for anyone who is responsible for trade in a big economy," Reynolds said, noting the UK's particular vulnerability as a globally-oriented economy.

The decline in trade could reduce UK economic output by 0.8 per cent annually, with fishing, petroleum and mining sectors potentially seeing exports fall by around a fifth.

Trump has also pledged to impose a 60 per cent tariff on Chinese imports and establish a new agency for collecting tariff revenue.

Labour's efforts to build ties with Trump face challenges after the party sent 100 activists to campaign for Kamala Harris, which Heritage Foundation expert Andrew Hale called "truly horrific” on GBN America.

The incoming administration will see Peter Mandelson, described as "a supreme political operator", take over as Britain's ambassador to Washington.
