The former prime minister tore into Sunak over policies being 'being done in the name of conservatism'

Boris Johnson has launched a scathing attack Rishi Sunak, describing his policies as "absolutely nuts".

He criticised plans to ban the sale of cigarettes to younger generations, as well as implying the Government is not putting enough money towards defence.

Speaking at a conservative conference in Ottawa, the former prime minister said some of the policies "being done in the name of conservatism" in the UK are "absolutely, absolutely nuts".

He told delegates: "I see my beloved party... we’re banning cigars. And what is the point?

"The party of Winston Churchill wants a ban. I mean, donnez-moi un break as they say in Quebec. It’s just mad."

This comes just days before MPs are set to vote on the Government's Tobacco and Vapes Bill.

Speaking about defence spending, Johnson added: “Now is the moment for an even more robust posture.

"We all need to recognise the world is more uncertain, more dangerous, we all need frankly to be spending more on defence — that goes for the UK as well as everybody else."

Polling published last week shows the Conservative Party is on course for a worse defeat than that seen by John Major in 1997, with eleven cabinet ministers at risk of losing their seats.

The YouGov poll shows that Labour would take 403 seats, while the Tories would be reduced to 155 seats.

Speaking at the same conference, Johnson also weighed in on the gender debate, claiming that JK Rowling says what most people “secretly think”.

The former prime minister heralded the feminist campaigner as a “modern saint” for her position on trans issues, claiming that “95 per cent” of the population privately agree with her.

Johnson said many people “don’t have the guts” to agree with Rowling publicly because they are “worried that they will offend somebody”.

Rowling, an outspoken defender of biological sex and womens spaces, has found herself at the centre of a row after the SNP introduced new hate crime laws in Scotland last week.

The Scottish Government introduced the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act last Monday, which creates a new offence of “stirring up of hatred” for protected characteristics, or “misgendering” trans people.

Speaking about the Harry Potter author, Johnson said: “She’s probably done more to encourage young people to read around the world than any other person I can think of.”

“And by the way, what’s so crazy, is what she says about gender is, of course, what 95 per cent of the population secretly think.”
