Andrew RT Davies MS is the Leader of the Welsh Conservatives

Exactly a year ago, Labour - with the support of Plaid Cymru nationalists - imposed their deeply unpopular default 20mph speed limit across Wales.

The rollout has cost nearly £40million to date, at a time when budgets are supposedly stretched and the Welsh NHS suffers from ever-growing, record-breaking waiting lists.

By Labour’s own admission, the Welsh economy is set to shrink by up to £9billion as a result of 20mph. So much for Keir Starmer’s plan to go for growth.

Left-wing politicians have also had their green credentials shattered and have had to abandon their previous position that slowing Wales down somehow reduces pollution.

In fact, the opposite is true, with council reports questioning this logic and a Transport for Wales study revealing that nitrogen dioxide levels increased inside half of the 20mph zones tested.

Despite all of this, Labour has defended their ridiculous pet project to the hilt.

The barmy 20mph policy is so unpopular that nearly half a million Welsh people signed a petition against it. The largest petition in the history of Welsh devolution.

That rattled the establishment in Cardiff Bay.

For the first time, Labour politicians, who have enjoyed perpetual power here in Wales, felt threatened by an engaged public clearly fed up of their far-removed, leftist think tank-concocted policies.

Labour ministers have gone out of their way to talk up supposed “reviews” of the “guidance”, but have yet to put forward anything material that changes the reality here in Wales.

This would be welcome given that Mark Drakeford once bizarrely said that speeders would be prosecuted and hit with fines unless they were “genuinely confused” about the limit.

How on earth people’s states of mind like this can be policed is beyond me.

So despite the spin, 20mph is well and truly here to stay.

There is no change.

Only the Welsh Conservatives stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Wales against the 20mph speed limit and continue to fight for its removal.

MORE FROM GBN MEMBERSHIP:

Labour, Plaid and the sole Lib Dem in the Senedd care more about what government-funded charities like Sustrans have to say than the overwhelming view of the Welsh public, 70 per cent of whom, according to the latest poll, want to see an end to this farce.

The Welsh Conservatives have a plan to get Wales moving again that doesn’t stop at scrapping 20mph.

Labour’s tone deaf road building freeze has blocked common sense plans to reach left behind parts of Wales with vital infrastructure, disconnecting people from work and opportunity.

We would reverse this backwards, anti-growth decision too and focus our efforts building transport links in areas that Labour has forgotten, like the South Wales valleys, as well as rural North and Mid Wales.

Addressing economic unfairness must be the mission of all Conservatives and backing the motorist is absolutely key to that.

So after a year of misery, it’s about time that we scrap Labour’s 20mph speed limit, end their war on motorists and get Wales moving again.
