Rachel Reeves vows to "get spades in the ground" for Heathrow expansion despite criticism describing the policy is a "con".

This morning the Chancellor Rachel Reeves has continued to outline her economic growth plan by committing to getting "spades in the ground" as she spoke on GBN Breakfast with Stephen and Ellie.

Labour's plan has drawn scorn from GB News presenter Andrew Pierce who has labelled the plan a "con" as a new runway would almost certainly not be completed during Labour's proposed timeframe of 2035.

Andrew also pointed to Reeves previously opposing plans to expand an airport in her own constituency and said “She wants a third runway at Heathrow, but she voted against the expansion of Leeds Airport in her own constituency”, he added “She’s a hypocrite.”

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary also hit out at the government saying ministers should scrap air passenger duty (APD) rather than “waffle on” about Heathrow, which he described as “a dead cat” that would not happen before the 2040s at the earliest.

Reeves yesterday stated that a third runway will "unlock further growth, boost investment increase exports and make the UK more open and more connected."
