Total spending on health and disability benefits was £64.7bn in 2023-24, according to government figures.

The government are set to announce major welfare reforms including £6bn in cuts to disability benefits. Over 7 million Britons claim sickness benefit with Work and Pensions Secretary, Liz Kendall planning on making it harder to qualify for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) which is currently being claimed by 3.6 million people.

Since the pandemic claims for health and disability benefits have increased dramatically and spending continues to rise. Total spending on health and disability benefits is forecast to rise from £64.7bn in 2023-24 to £100.7bn in 2029-30.

The government has promised that the most vulnerable will be protected under the new system.
