Jack Otway, Digital Sports Editor for GB News, gives his verdict on whether Gareth Southgate should stay on as England manager
Gareth Southgate has faced a wealth of criticism over his management in recent weeks but the England team have made it to the final stage in the UEFA Euro 2024.
Ahead of the Three Lions playing Spain in the UEFA Euro 2024 final this Sunday, GB News' Digital Sports Editor Jack Otway discussed the criticism towards the England manager.
In an exclusive video for GB News members, he said: "He's obviously exceeded all expectations. I was one of those people who, when he got the job in 2016, thought there were better candidates out there. But he's made me eat my words.
"He's guided us further at major tournaments than other England managers have been able to do over the years.
"I think he does deserve the right to walk away when he feels his best. But then there is the risk as well that he could outstay his welcome.
"There are some good managers out there who would probably play in a much more entertaining, easy-on-the-eye way, but that doesn't always win the tournament.
"So I think whilst it's understandable that some England fans would like Southgate to move on, maybe be careful what you wish for because there is a risk you could go backwards."
