The number of Britons who think immigration is a good thing is crashing - and they have good reason to feel this, says Matt Goodwin

OPINION - For the first time in history, Nigel Farage and the Reform party have topped the polls
I said it would happen and today it happened.
For the first time in history, Nigel Farage and the Reform party have topped the polls, sharing first place with the Labour Party, on 25 per cent, and 5-points clear of the Tories.
The poll, by Find Out New, a respected pollster, has dropped a bomb in Westminster
It not only shows that Reform has already won over one in four people who voted for Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives back in July but is also more popular than the Tories among ever age group except pensioners

But what’s driving it?
Well, if you’ve read my newsletter you will know what the top concerns are for Reform voters.
Stopping illegal and mass immigration.
And these concerns are certainly not unique to Reform voters.
The establishment said people would become more in favour of mass immigration but they were wrong.
Just look at some of the other polls of late.
Today, according to YouGov, 70 per cent of the public say immigration is “too high”.
And at the same time the per cent who think immigration has been mostly good for the country has crashed to a record low of just 18 per cent!
And let’s be honest - they have good reason to feel this way.
Extreme policy of mass immigration -low skill, low wage, from outside Europe. 86% of all migration comes from outside Europe.
This is the space Reform is filling.
The only question is whether the old parties can now close this space down but with the small boat crossings up 25% on last year, and legal immigration now completely out of control this doesn’t look likely.
