OPINION: GB News contributor Carole Malone has hit out at Manchester police for trying to silence Helen Jones

Just where do Manchester cops get off targeting and intimidating a granny who’d committed no crime – but had “dared” to criticise David Sedgewick, one of the councillors who’d been part of the vile WhatsApp group which that wished pensioners dead and hoped constituents would be runover by a truck.

Well, Helen Jones, 54, wasn’t the only one who had a go at those disgusting people and their grossly offensive messages which led to the sacking of health minister Andrew Gwynne, the suspension of Burnley MP Oliver Ryan and 11 councillors - David Sedgewick being one of them.

These people were in a position of trust but they abused it by mocking pensioners and making homophobic and misogynistic remarks about people who were making legitimate complaints about what was happening in their area.

So, in what is clearly a sinister abuse of their power two senior detectives from Manchester Police turned up at unannounced at Helen Jones house. Thankfully she was down the road looking after her grandson but her husband was home and refused to let them in. But he did film them. And good job too because this kind of intimidation needs to be exposed.

Even though these cops admitted from the off Helen had committed no crime and they had no power to do anything about her Facebook posts they came to her house anyway with the intention of intimidating and silencing her. And they succeeded because now Helen says she’s too frightened to post anything.

So, those two detectives must be very proud of themselves at having terrified Helen Jones into submission. And maybe today when they’re reflecting on their stupidity and their bully boy tactics they should ask themselves if scaring grannies is what they came into policing to do?

But then this is Starmer’s Stasi Britain. Our supposedly liberal Left Government can’t take any criticism and when faced with it seeks to silence it in the most insidious, Orwellian way imaginable.

Just to show what an appalling abuse of power (not to mention a total waste of police time) this exercise was it should be pointed out that Manchester has one of the highest crimes rates in the country. In 2023, there were more than 140,000 violent offences committed, more than 101,000 theft offences. There were 32 murders and more than 70% of all burglaries went unsolved. Oh, and the police let 80,000 crimes go unrecorded. So, with all that going on couldn’t these officers have found something better to do with their time than target Helen Rogers over something that wasn’t a crime?

And let’s just look at Helen’s Facebook comments about councillor David Sedgewick which apparently offended him so much.

One said: “ Let’s hope he( Sedgewick) does the decent thing and resigns.”

Another said: “Not looking good for councillor Sedgewick.”

And another: “Will you resign Councillor Sedgewick?”

Now, are you shocked, appalled or scared by any of these. Nope me neither. Helen was simply exercising her democratic right to criticise the actions of an elected councillor who’d behaved badly enough to be suspended. And in no way did it warrant a visit from Plod .

The police’s pathetic excuse for turning up at Helen’s house was that she needed to be informed that a complaint had been made. Yes, well they could have done that by phone. It didn’t need two of them turning up at her house but, of course they did that because they knew the effect it was to have - to scare her into stopping her posts.

Mind you if Helen have been burgled, or battered across the head by thugs she might have to wait longer than 48 hours for a detective to turn up (that’s how long it took for them to come after the complaint was made )

But No, for some bizarre reason a few innocuous Facebook posts about suspended councillor David Sedgewick suddenly became a top priority for a force with one of THE worst crime rates in Britain.

It’s a shocking indictment on what this country has become since Starmer came to power. Any dissent of his Government or its elected representatives – is jumped on with hobnail boots from a great height. And Starmer has the brass neck to say this week that Right wing politics in this country are dangerous.

Are they Hell!!! We all have eyes and we see who the danger is – it’s him and the Left.

And let’s look at David Sedgewick’s part in all this. When Helen Rogers asked police if HE was the one who’d complained about her posts the cops at first refused to say. When she asked again if it was Sedgewick the officer’s words were: “Your thought processes are correct in that.”

What, so are Manchester police officers now doing the bidding of local councillors who are upset at someone who dares to criticise them? Is that how it works these days? Because if it is it’s in complete contravention to what the police’s job is - to act independently and impartially.

Trouble is since this Labour Government came to power we’ve seen too many police forces acting in a way that is clearly politically motivated. And this farce with Helen Rogers is a prime example.

The police need to be reminded that they exist to serve us, the British people. Their job isn’t to intimidate, boss about or frighten innocent people it’s to catch criminals and these days they’re shockingly bad at that.

They need to forget the Stasi tactics and concentrate on what they exist to do - catch the bad guys!
