Gary Lineker has done the impossible; he has become the hero of Hamas.
How did he achieve this remarkable feat?
So he’s sitting around on Saturday doing his Match of the Day shift and reads a tweet from a Palestinian group who support Hamas.
That tweet says international sports bodies should ban Israel from tournaments.
Lineker tells the Telegraph that mistakenly he thought it said Israel had been banned from tournaments.
In any event, no matter where the truth lies, he decided to retweet it.
The shit then hit the fan and two things have happened since.
Firstly, the Quids News Network, a Palestinian news agency affiliated to Hamas, published a story on its new site trumpeting Lineker’s reposting of the proposed ban with the headline; “Renowned English broadcaster calls for Israel to be banned from international football.’’
Having seen the furore Lineker then decided to delete the retweet.
His contract with the BBC ends next year and at 63 surely it’s a good way of the allegedly hard-up Corporation saving his £1.3million a year pay packet, plus end what seems the never ending furore around his social media exploits.
His age would be a problem in any event. I remember rather good lady from Question of Sport got pushed out because there were too many grey hairs among the blonde hairs.
He knows he is tweaking the tail of the tiger every time he goes on socials. My advice to the Nice but Tim guy who runs BBC to run down the contract.
Who needs this aggro. Certainly not the licence fee payers who are sick and tired of the money he makes and the trouble he causes.
With the best will in the world it’s time he buggered off.
