Ben Habib argues that Labour wants the UK to be governed by the EU

The Tory approach to governance was performatively to distract us in the hope we might believe they were acting. You name the policy area, scratch behind the surface of obfuscation and blame and their failure is revealed.

Brexit done in name only. Immigration not reduced by the so-called “skills-based points system”. Borders not secured by absurd Rwanda. Energy security not just not delivered but seriously compromised. The military not strengthened. The country not levelled up. National finances not balanced. Taxes never cut. The private sector not championed. The list is endless. Oh, sure they talked a good fight, but they did two halves of nothing.

Labour’s approach will be even worse. Instead of falsely addressing problems, they will sweep them under the carpet.

There will be no policy area in which they will do this with greater damage than immigration. The fact is, Labour could not care about borders. Blair hoodwinked us into freedom of movement with Europe. Starmer will do the same but globally. Whether they come by dinghy or plane, with or without a visa, they will be welcome.

Look no further than Starmer’s plan for the boats. It turns on breaking the people smuggling gangs by, guess what, bringing together under “joint command and bolstered by anti-terrorism powers” (sounds good) five existing domestic agencies. Someone needs to tell Starmer the gangs are not in the UK. They are in Europe.

No matter how much the National Crime Agency (domestic), Border Force (domestic), Immigration Enforcement (domestic), Crown Prosecution Service (domestic) and MI5 (domestic) want to break the gangs they cannot. The gangs do not cross the Channel – they stop in Calais. Does Starmer take us for idiots?

It boggles the mind the French cannot break these gangs. You would think it easy to identify and stop tens of thousands of people illegally crossing France at any point in time. The French authorities are clearly useless. But no matter how effective our domestic agencies are (they aren’t by the way), there is the square root of nil they can do about what is going on in France.

So Starmer will have to contend with masses of boats coming across the Channel. How will he hide that? The answer is simple. The asylum application process will be streamlined for which there will be close to no rejections/ deportations. Illegal migrants will be given the right to remain in double quick time.

The optics of putting them up in four-star hotels, which so dogged the Tories, will be gone. They will be embedded in our society with priority access to social housing and the job market. The signal that will go out across Europe and the World is that if you can make it onto British soil (hardly a demanding task) you will be allowed to stay. It will be an open invitation to the UK.

LATEST OPINION:

And with their being welcomed in this way will come a continued undermining of wages by their cheap labour and an inability for Brits to gain access to housing. Worse, the tearing at our cultural fabric will continue apace; not to mention the risk to our society by criminality. We know nothing about these people. They arrive without papers, often from war-torn countries which hold us and our society in contempt. Labour’s approach is a recipe for disaster.

And if that is not bad enough, Starmer is going to sign us up to the EU’s resettlement programme for illegal migrants. This is Brussels’ answer to its own stupid open border policy. Instead of securing Europe, illegal migrants will be handed out in quotas to countries across the EU. Brussels is legalising illegal migration.

Not being in the EU might have protected us from such a mad hatter scheme. Alas no, Starmer wants the UK to be governed by the EU – he wants this scheme.

Some with whom I have had the misfortune of debating over the last few years have accused me of stoking division when I say Europhiles are anti-British. But you cannot be pro-EU, pro-open borders and simultaneously claim you care about the UK. To do away with borders as Starmer will, is to destroy the UK.

Starmer is anti-British.
