Labour MP Jonathan Ashworth says the ‘word’ in Parliament is suggestive of a general election in May.

The Tories have been quick to quash the suggestion, but it has again thrown open discussions as to when we can expect a general election to take place.

Rishi Sunak said in January that his ‘working assumption’ is that a general election will take place in the latter stages of 2024.

But he is facing calls to have it earlier to ensure it does not clash with the US election cycle, with the vote down under set to take place in November.
