In an interview with Amol Rajan, former Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has said he believes the BBC wanted him to leave as he was negotiating his new contract last year.
When asked by Amol Rajan why Lineker would choose to leave the BBC he responded "Well, perhaps they want me to leave. There was the sense of that."
Lineker said "I always wanted one more contract," he added "in the end, I think there was a feeling that, because it was a new rights period, it was a chance to change the programme."
Lineker was also questioned on his suspension from the BBC in March 2023 following comments he posted on social media. Asked whether he regretted the posts he said "I don't regret saying them publicly, because I was right - what I said, it was accurate - so not at all in that sense."
