I’m 50-50 over Trump. On the one hand I love his attack on government spending, admire him taking on vested interest over diversity and inclusion and cheer from the rafters at him pushing back illegal migration.
On the other hand I hated, actually detested, his abuse of President Zelensky. The Ukrainian leader deserved to be treated like the brave wartime leader he is. The opposite happened. Trump’s bullying in front of a global audience could have been a scene from a Netflix Mafia movie.
I’m sure it will be one day. After all they made a film drama about the Frost-Nixon interviews of 1977 (it starred Michael Sheen) that had nothing of the real-life drama of Trump-Zelensky.
Trump couldn’t help himself. Instead of understanding Zelensky hadn’t slept in the same bed on consecutive nights for three years for fear of Putin’s assassins, that every waking moment he was going from nation to nation begging for money and was at the end of his tether having seen 14,000 of his people killed, he was viewed by the White House as ungrateful for refusing to bend at the knee to the Great Man.
Personally, my admiration for Zelensky knows no bounds. He and his people are fighting for the free world. If we don’t support Zelensky what would we fight for? Does democracy mean nothing? Are all political enemies to be simply thrown out of hotel windows? Are borders to be crossed and land taken as long as you have the arms and cannon fodder at your disposal?
Trump doesn’t worry about such niceties. These are his priorities;
- 1)Stop the war as it’s costing the American taxpayer a lot of money.
- 2)Getting his hands on the mineral wealth of Ukraine as payment for his arms.
- 3)Bow to Putin and bring him back into the global community.
- 4)And shockingly signal to China that he will be doing a Ukraine on Taiwan and if they invade be his guest.
Having lived in America (I was an editorial executive on Murdoch’s New York Post) I know only too well that what happens in eastern Europe is of no interest whatsoever to the American public. They aren’t interested in Tennessee so why should they care about Donetsk?
They have vague notions about the oppressed and the oppressor, but that is trumped by the rising cost of food and meds. Therefore, Trump knew he was on a winner when he cut off the aid to Ukraine. A wake-up call to wishy washy Western Europe.
Donald Trump has led some questioning his leadership

Me and my generation have been the lucky ones. Born just after the Second World War we have known nothing but peace and have been certain in the knowledge that when push comes to shove the United Sates would protect us. That time is over.
The idea that we can protect ourselves on 2.5% of GDP is for the birds. That number will have to double in the next few years if we are to sleep easily in our beds. Already Labour is indicating that benefits will have to be cut to pay for guns. Excellent news.
So, in some ways we should be grateful to President Trump for cutting us adrift. We should stand on our own two feet. We should no longer have to look West to make our decisions. The days of having allies who would stand by you in difficult times seems so yesterday.
Strangely, these tumultuous changes will be helpful to Sir Keir Starmer and might damage Nigel Farage . Being close to Trump in the four years ahead will be a bumpy ride for Reform.
Trump appears well disposed to the old UK but what happens if we don’t polish his shoes brightly enough? That’s the problem when you dance with the devil. The tunes get faster and faster and you struggle to keep up.
As I say I am 50-50 with Trump right now, but I could see a day if there are any more public bullyings when the balance tips against.
