In the name of Hilda - cyclists who kill will finally face life - Kelvin MacKenzie

Kelvin MacKenzie hails the decision to punish cyclists for dangerous behaviour
It won’t come as any solace to the family of Hilda Griffiths, 81, but her death caused by a cyclist doing 29mph in Regent’s Park where the limit is 20mph, has led to Ministers backing a law change meaning death by dangerous cycling could carry a life sentence, similar to car drivers.
Hilda (who took almost two months to die after the accident) was crossing the road when hit by a cyclist, while he and his fellow members of his Muswell Club were making timed laps of the park.
As you might expect, he had his head down as he pedalled furiously and didn’t see her until late.
Her inquest was told last week he could not be prosecuted because, ludicrously, the speed limit did not apply to cycles only cars.
In relation to cyclists generally, I would like to see more arrests of those who are simply sailing through red lights, going the wrong way up one-way streets and using pavements as through fares.
In London, especially central London, this is a nightmare.
And I hate to heap more work on our hard-pressed officers but they need to feel a few collars. Cyclists believe they are above the law.
What is clear is that with this new act coming in cyclists are going to have to be insured as they will be sued by families on top of any action taken by the courts against the.
Either they will carry insurance or they will be bankrupted by the costs and the awards.
As they see to able to afford bikes costing thousands, and clothes costing hundreds, I’m sure they can stretch to £200 for an insurance.
