Kelvin McKenzie asks how many young people would be willing to defend their country

Sir Patrick Sanders, head of the Army, had some worrying news for young people.

He said, unsurprisingly in my view, that in the event of a war with Russia, there would have to be conscription because our military is too small.

The sale of anti-depressants had already gone up alarmingly after a recent warning from a Nato official that citizens should prepare for all-out war with Russia within the next 20 years and that would require wholesale changes in their lives.

The generations who have been born since 1945 have lived through the most peaceful period this nation has ever known.

On that basis I wonder if the young are capable of fighting a war and all the sacrifice that entails.

After all, around 30 per cent are claiming mental health issues, anxiety and the like. Would they wave that card to avoid being drafted?

And there is no young person anybody knows who is not always claiming their rights- with human rights being at the top of the list.

So would the young all start saying they were conscientious objectors?

As of today the most difficult issue a young person faces is whether to switch from EE to Vodafone?

And with us taking in so many people from around the world would they be inclined to fight for our nation.

For instance, if full scale battles broke out with Iran – they are currently involved in seven wars from Israel to Pakistan- would the ever growing Muslim population in the UK feel prepared to take up arms?

Sir Patrick can call for conscription but I wonder how many would answer?
