A 36-year-old man was sentenced to 49 months in prison after pleading guilty to several counts of owning a dog which caused injury while dangerously out of control in a public place

A six-year-old girl has been left with scars across her body after being mauled by a pack of XL Bully dogs.

Amelia Bird, from Carrington in Greater Manchester, suffered more than 30 wounds during the attack.

Her mother Jade, 33, who assumed her daughter was dead, told The Daily Mirror: “The doctors said they had never come across anyone else with dog bites so severe.

“Even after surgery she’s got scars across her eye, her eyelid, which we call the rainbow, and scars along her tummy, her back, bum, legs and arms. She will have these for the rest of her life.

“She’s suffering mentally. She will always suffer mentally as a result of this. She has got worse when it comes to dogs, and being around dogs.”

Jade moved to a new neighbourhood in Carrington with 36-year-old husband Lee.

The couple, who was expecting their third daughter Bonnie, brought with them Amelia and her 10-year-old sister Lara.

Lara attempted to help her sister during the attack but her sister fell in and out of consciousness as her family rushed her to hospital.

Valentine was jailed or 49 months after pleading guilty to the charges relating to Amelia and admitting two further offences relating to the previous attack.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is now launching a probe into the conduct of two Greater Manchester Police officers in relation to separate incidents of dog bites in the same street.

A spokesman said: “We will also consider whether the report identifies any areas of learning for the force to improve the response to similar incidents in the future. We will share our findings with those involved as soon as we are able.”

A spokesman for Minshull Street Crown Court added: “Reports being done to confirm the breeds have been delayed, due to an outbreak of a virus at the kennels. It would appear they are still there. A hearing will be held but is not yet scheduled.”

A spate of fatal XL Bully attacks resulted in Rishi Sunak launching a new ban on the breed without a certificate of exemption in February.
