All trains to and from the station were brought to a standstill

A train station in Vienna has been evacuated after an "unspecified threat" sparked havoc in the Austrian capital's major rail hub.

All trains were halted, the national rail company OBB revealed this afternoon.

Local media reported that the threats were sent via email while officials have not yet released details about the sender.

"A large police operation is underway at Vienna's main station," a local outlet said.

The police later confirmed that all other modes of transport had been put on hold - including underground, tram and bus services.

Local media outlets have reported that signs scattered around the main station read: "Please leave the building immediately! ALARM".

Police are believed to have given the all clear, while the rail company OBB confirmed that trains would resume their services although travellers should expect delays and cancellations.

“Good news! Our trains are running again at Vienna main station. Please expect continued delays and train cancellations," OBB posted online.

The OBB app had initially claimed that no services would be running until 6pm local time, according to Der Standard.

To conduct their investigation, police officers sealed off a perimeter surrounding the station - a hub which offers travel services across Europe to Hungary, the Czech Republic, Italy and Germany.

The incident has followed a series of bomb scares last year that led to multiple evacuations of major stations - leading to numerous delays across the country.
