A transgender weightlifter inclusion in the competition was branded ‘completely unfair’

An athlete has been left fuming after a transgender competitor broke the championship’s female record.

April Hutchinson voiced concern about Anne Andres competing in the 2023 Western Canadian Championship on Sunday.

Andres, 40, stormed to victory after lifting a combined 200 kilograms more than the championship’s runner-up SuJan Gill.

The transgender powerlifter totalled 597.5 kilograms across squat, bench and deadlift disciplines.

Gill’s runner-up stood at a combined total of 387.5 kilograms.

Hutchinson criticised the decision to allow Andrew to compete, labelling the 40-year-old’s inclusion as “completely unfair”.

She added: “It’s bodies that play sports, not identities.

“Remember, bodies are biology, not identities that play sports.”

Andres’ total set a new Canadian women’s national record and unofficially exceeded the women’s world record.

It's been very disheartening' to see Andres beat the record,” Hutchinson told TalkTV.

“Athletes have been chasing that for years. And we're talking top athletes who have been training and training and training.”

She added: “My boyfriend could basically walk in tomorrow, identify as a female, compete, and then the next day, go back to being a man again.”

American swimmer Riley Gaines, who is a vocal critic of trans women competing in women’s sport, slammed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on social media.

She said: “Justin Trudeau’s radical disdain for women (and reality) in effect.”

Gaines added: “Andres’ record is a mediocre lift by a mediocre male powerlifter because the Canadian Powerlifting Union is discriminating against female athletes.”

Andres previously mocked female powerlifters by claiming they were “so bad” at bench pressing.

The 40-year-old said in February: “Why is women's bench so bad?

“'I mean not compared to me, we all know that I'm a tranny freak, so that doesn't count.

“I mean, standard bench in powerlifting competitions for women. I literally don't understand why it's so bad.”
