A police spokesman said there was only one survivor of the crash

A plane has crashed off the coast of Thailand leaving at least six people dead.

Officers said the aircraft was caught on camera nosediving into the water while on a test flight to prepare for parachute training.

The crash took place in the Gulf of Thailand near Hua Hin Airport just after 8am.

Royal Thai Police spokesman Archayon Kraithong told local media there was only one survivor of the crash.

Police confirmed the crash happened during its force's test flight mission to prepare for a parachute jump training exercise.

It is believed the incident took place off the coast of the Baby Grand Cha-am Resort, a hotel in Cha-am.

A spokesman from Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Police said: "We are currently coordinating with relevant agencies to provide assistance because the incident occurred in the sea, far from the shore, which makes it difficult to provide assistance. If there are any further details, we will report them."

Eyewitness Isara Supasa said: "I was shocked and ran onto the beach. There was no sign of life coming from the plane."
