Six people have been killed after a man went on a stabbing rampage at a popular Australian shopping centre in Sydney.

Multiple others were injured in the attack, before the 40-year-old knifeman was shot dead by police at Westfield Bondi Junction.

Eight victims, included a nine-month-old baby were rushed to hospital as paramedics hurried to the scene.

The mall went into lockdown shortly before 4pm local time as hundreds rushed to exit the premises, with the police declaring a "major incident".

Reports of a potential second attacker are believed to be incorrect.

Authorities are telling people to avoid the area, as the streets remain filled with ambulances and police vehicles.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the incident is not thought to be terror-related.
